2012: European Capital of Sports Istanbul
The European Capitals of Sport Association (ACES) has elected Istanbul as European Capital of Sport for 2012.
After holding the title of European Capital of Culture 2010, Istanbul fought off competition to be named European Capital of Sport by a unanimous decision.
The purpose of the European Capital of Sports Award is to acknowledge and make a real commitment to, the role that sport plays in increasing the physical wellbeing of individuals, quality of life and promoting harmonious social relations.

EVENTS IN TURKEY - ISTANBUL
9th - 11th March 2012: World Indoor Championships in Athletics
The Turkish city of Istanbul has been awarded the right to host the 2012 World Indoor Championships following the IAAF Council meeting.
Istanbul is famous as the only city in the world that straddles two different continents (Europe and Asia), and as one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, with a population of nearly 15 million, there should be plenty of supporters for the second most important event in World athletics.
The World Indoors will take place in the Sinan Erdem Dome, which has a capacity of 17,500 seats, and is just 10 minutes away from the international airport.

25th April 2012: ANZAC Day Gallipoli
On 25th April 1915 the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on ANZAC Cove at Gallipoli Turkey at 4.29 am This landing has been commemorated ever since in Australia, New Zealand and Turkey.
ANZAC Day, 25th of April, is the most important date in Australia's and New Zealand's calendar. Across the length and breadth of Australia and New Zealand people turn out to salute, honour and pay their respects to the fallen and to the surviving servicemen who willingly offered their lives to the service of their country.

11th - 13 May 2012: Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four
Euroleague Basketball is pleased to announce the city of Istanbul as the home of the 2012 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four.
The state-of-the-art Sinan Erdem Arena, which opened in 2010 to host the FIBA World Championships final stages, will host European basketball’s premier event in early May 2012.
The 2012 Final Four brings the event back to Istanbul for the first time in two decades.

June - November 2012: Sand Sculpture Festival Antalya
The 5th International Antalya Sand Festival, which is one of the largest Sand Festivals in the world, will be held in Lara Beach Park Complex in Antalya June and November 2012. This year the theme of the sand sculpture festival is Hollywood.
As well as the legendary stars of Hollywood, memorable scenes from epic Hollywood movies will also be sculpted from sand. A large area of 7,000 square meters will be held specifically for a 25-meter-long dinosaur that will be made out of sand.
The exhibition will resemble a dream and special effects lighting and sound effects at night will surely create a wonderland-like scenery.

End of June - Beginning of July 2012: Historical Oil Wrestling Kirkpinar
The historical Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling is the oldest wrestling festival in the world which has been continuing since the first contests in 1357 in Rumelia.
It has been bounded with a tradition of almost 651 years, hosts persevering contests for a week, with folk-dance groups, millions of spectators, artists and statesmen both from Turkey and all over the world, and with a varying array of activities.
The contests take place at the end of June and at the beginning of July, last 7 days.

Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival has made a great deal of contribution to the representation of Turkey in an international basis, celebrating its nineeenth year along with the marvellous acoustics which Aspendos Antique Theatre offers, the natural beauties of Antalya and with the nature of art which is without distinction of any language, religion, race or borders.
18th Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival took place between June 9th and July 2nd, 2012 and 8 events took place for artlovers, at two of which the international guests were performed.

15th July 2012: Bosphorus Cross Continental Swimming Race
Bosphorus Cross Continental Races from Asia to Europe which were organized by the NOCT first in 1989 with 4 women and 64 men continue to draw more attention each year.
Last year, in 2011, almost 800 swimmers have raced from Asia to Europe.
Thousands of audiences are expected to follow the race on both European and Asian shores of Bosphorus.

15th August 2012: Feast of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life is a defined dogma of the Catholic Church.
The Feast of the Assumption, celebrated every year on August 15, is a very old feast of the Church, celebrated universally by the sixth century.
It commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay, a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time.

27th - 30th September 2012, 4th - 7th October 2012: World Golf Team Amateur Championships
The International Golf Federation (IGF) awarded the city of Antalya, Turkey, the right to host the 2012 World Team Amateur Championships in Golf (WATC), its largest event. The 2012 championship will be held at Gloria Club, PGA Sultan, and Cornelia Golf Club Nick Faldo in Antalya.
Turkey was running against two other bids from Italy and Austria. Ahmet Agaoglu, President of the Turkish Golf Federation said, “It is a great honour for us to have been selected as a host for the 2012 edition of this great event”.

27th August - 10th September 2012: Chess Olympiad Istanbul
The 2012 Olympiad is going to be held in Istanbul, Turkey.
The 78th FIDE Congress held during the 38th Chess Olympiad taking place from 12 to 25 November 2008 in Dresden ended as another organizational triumph for the Turkish Chess Federation, representing one of the most rapidly developing chess countries in the world.
The number of the members of the federation has increased from 3.000 to 255.000 in about eight years with an increasing number of titled chess players.

October 2012: Intercontinental Istanbul Eurasia Marathon
The Istanbul Eurasia Marathon is an international athletics event in Istanbul, every year on a Sunday in October since 1979. The 2012 edition takes place in October.
The Eurasia Marathon is the major running event in Istanbul and the only one in the world where you can run from one continent to another. A competitive 15km and a 8km fun run are organized on the same day.
The marathon starts on the Asian side of the city, short before the First Bosphorus Bridge, crosses the bridge giving an outstanding view of the Bosphorus and Istanbul, and passes many historic sites including the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, and ends in the Inonu Stadium in the European part.

International Wooden Sailing Yacht Regatta Bodrum Cup 2012
Wooden yachts will set sail for the 24th time to win the Bodrum Cup in October 2012. Bodrum Cup, one of the biggest naval organizations of Turkey, is one of the few races of the Mediterranean, where yachts sail with passengers on board. It is a Naval Festival, where yachts built mostly in domestic boatyards are exhibited in action.
Anyone, not just sailors, can participate in the regatta on our yachts. Individuals who participate can just take it easy and enjoy the cruise or, if they wish, they can assist in sail handling and other crew activities becoming fully involved in the excitement of the regatta.

2012: WTA Tennis Championships Istanbul
The WTA Tour Championships is a tennis tournament played annually at the end of the season for the top-ranked players on the Womens Tennis Association (WTA) tour.
The WTA Tour Championships is generally considered to be the fifth most prestigious event on the womens tour after the four Grand Slam tournaments.
It also has the largest prize money and ranking points after the Grand Slams. The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour announced that Istanbul, Turkey will host the 2012-2013 Sony Ericsson Championships.
