Optional Tour 1: Eternal Rome & Imperial Rome Walking Tour

Decription:
Eternal Rome
We head from the Piazza Esquilino bus terminal to Republic Square to view the
Fountain of the Nymphs, sculptured by Mario Rutelli and lauded by Mussolini as
the exaltation of eternal youth and the capital's first salute to art.
The tour continues on to Via Veneto, the street made famous by Fellini's 1960
film La Dolce Vita. These days, it draws many tourists charmed by the many
open-air cafes that line the sidewalks.
A trip to Rome would not be complete without a visit to the - Spanish Steps, the
most famous square in the city. Climb its 138 steps and delight in Bernini's
Fountain of Barcaccia.
Likewise, throwing coins into the Trevi Fountain is also a must for every
visitor. It is said that a visitor is sure to return to Rome if he makes a wish
at the fountain, recognized as the biggest and most significant Baroque
fountains of Rome.
The tour also stops at the Pantheon, a prime architectural wonder of Ancient
Rome. Studied by Michelangelo, it is the burial place of Raffaello and Italian
Kings.
The last stop is Navona Square. Once a stadium built by Caesar Domiziano in 92
AD, it is now known as the Square of the Artists and for Bernini's Four River's
Fountain.
Imperial Rome
After lunch, the tour first stops at Piazza Venezia, Rome's Historical Center
where visitors can view "The Vittoriano" the altar dedicated to the King
Vittorio Emanuele II in 1911.
The tour's second stop is at the Capitol Square. Michaelangelo's Renaissance
palace built on the ruins of the Acropolis and dating back to the 16th century
is now the seat of the city government. The square is marked by several notable
works of art, among them the two colossal statues of Castor and Pollux that
stand guard on the magnificent staircase leading to the palace.
The Roman empire's political, military and social center is the Roman Forums.
The oldest and most significant buildings of the empire are usually located in
the Forum. These days, the ruins of the Forum consists of the Temple of Julius
Caesar, Basilica Emilia, the Arch of Titus and the Holy Road
The tour also visits Rome's greatest amphitheatre built by the Emperor Vespasian
in 72 AD - the Colosseum. The last stop is the Basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli
that houses Michelangelo's masterpiece, the statue of Moses.

Optional Tour 2: The Vatican & Imperial Rome
Duration: Full day

The Vatican
Porta Pinciana will be our first stop, a gate for the Aurelian Walls of Rome and
built in the early 5th century under the order of the Emperor Honorius.
The next stop is the Villa Borghese, built by the architect Flaminio Ponzio
developed from the sketches by Scipione Borghese, an Italian art collector.
Continue the artistic path by visiting the Vatican Museums which represent the
largest art collection in Europe with over 65, 000 masterpieces at the
Candelabra Gallery, Tapestry Gallery and see the Historical Maps.
Soothe your soul and stop by the Sistine Chapel. See this wondrous structure
built in the 15th century under the rule of Pope Sixtus filled with glorious
artworks by Botticelli, Pergino, Ghirlandaio and the famous ceiling by
Michelangelo.
Of course, we will also visit the Scala Regia, the great staircase built by
Gianlorenzo Bernini which started as an eyesore and transformed by the great
artist using an art technique called trompe l'oeil.
St. Peter's Basilica is the last stop. The largest Church all over the world is
home to Michelangelo's famous "The Pieta" and several tombs of past Popes.

of the Imperial Forums, making our way to the Coliseum, the symbol of Rome.
Among the other sites are the Arch of Constantine, the Circus Maximus, Theater
of Marcellus and the Synagogue.
See Tiberina Island, and visit the Piazza Navona and discover the mystical Four
Rivers Fountain. The next stop will be at Castle Sant'Angelo in Conciliazione
Street. We will also see Vatican City at night, the location of St. Peter's
Basilica, the largest in the world.
See these world-famous monuments from inside a comfortable coach bus just before

Rome was once the center of the world and the Roman Forum and Colosseum were at
the center of this great ancient city. Walk with us past the funeral pyre of
Ceasar, mentioned by Shakespeare, and walk on stones that emperors and saints
alike must have touched. Learn more about the connection between the Church and
the city and find out how the two are beautifully connected as your local guide
talks about the last days in the lives of Saints Peter and Paul and the
connection between St. Lawrence and the Temple of Antoninus Pius and Faustina.
Highlights:
We'll walk directly past the Arch of Titus and talk about the sober destruction
of Jerusalem and subsequent Diaspora. Not to be missed amongst the ruins is one
of the most famous landmarks in the world: The Colosseum. We'll talk about the
different schools of gladiators, what place they held in Roman society, and why
the Colosseum held significance not only as an entertainment complex, but how it
played a pivotal role in Rome's political climate at the time.
