MEDITERRANEAN GAMES MERSIN 2013

The Mediterranean Games, organised every four years, stand as the greatest multidisciplinary sport event for the countries of the Mediterranean Basin after the Olympic Games, gathering the sport delegations of the Mediterranean NOCs members of the ICMG in more that 25 disciplines.

These games offer the opportunity to young people from three Continents (Europe, Africa, Asia), different origins, cultures and religions, yet bound together by the Olympic Ideal, to come together in the same place. Signature ceremony was held for 2013 Mediterranean Games, which was decided to be hosted in Mersin as Greece announced that they couldnt due to economic crisis.

Students, wearing the names of countries participating in 2013 Mediterranean Games have come to stage at first in the ceremony that was held in Metropolitan Municipality Convention and Exhibition Hall.

Olympic Flag was carried to stage by Nevin Yanit, National Athlete, in shouts of applause. Signing ceremony was concluded by Hasan Basri Guzeloglu, Mersin Governor, Amar Addadi, Mediterranean Games Commission Chairman, Macit Ozcan, Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mayor, Yunus Akgul, General Director of Youth and Sports, and Nese Gundogan, Secretary General, National Olympics Committee of Turkey.

Addressing the participants, Mayor Hasan Basri Guzeloglu said that Mersin was to represent Turkey in 2013 Mediterranean Games.

Noting that this was a true pride for all those who contributed to this process, Guzeloglu said: "This is a historic moment, a very beautiful moment.

Witnessing and participating in this is certainly very meaningful. This is a success for Turkey. Accordingly, this is a success for Mersin as well. This is a success that followed our countrys success stories that reassured and was followed worldwide in recent years".

"This is a success in terms of sports that was strengthen with success stories in general and not only in organizational means" said Guzeloglu, adding:

"This is a success of the likes of Nevin Yanit, who is on the stage right now and who is Mersins and Turkeys true pride and joy.

Contention is not to organize 2013 in Mersin but to organize the best of all times in Mersin this year. We will succeed in this together".

Noting that they were excited to carry out the best organization as well as becoming the most successful country in 2013, Guzeloglu said: "Mersin sets to a great future as of today. And not only in terms of sports either, we are setting to a great future by all means. City is redefined so to speak and social and physical infrastructure are being completed from this perspective".

Metropolitan Mayor Macit Ozcan said that they were to prepare the city for games until 2013 very much like a broom preparing for a wedding. Ozcan repeated “We are ready” in Arabic and French.

Amar Addadi, Mediterranean Games Commission Chairman, told that they were satisfied with the warm welcome in Mersin. Noting that Mersin worked hard to host games, Addadi added he was confident that Mersin would overcome the difficulties of limited preparation time.

Explaining that they were aware of the potential Turkey had, Addadi said: "You have our full confidence. We visited some facilities and were satisfied. We trust you".

Following the speech, olympic flag hold on stage by Nevin Yanit was given to Governor Guzeloglu by Addadi.

Later protocol members, who were invited to stage, participated in this joy.
